For those of you who want to know the secrets of the NYPL Digital Gallery’s XML, here are the 3 simple steps:

1. Go to the picture whose metadata you are dying to see. We’ll start with this tremendous picture of Eartha Kitt by Kenn Duncan (http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/dgkeysearchdetail.cfm?trg=1&strucID=1752329&imageID=ps_the_cd72_1109&total=1&e=w#_seemore)

2. Below the picture you should see a clickable link for Image Details. Click that and it will expand to show you Image title, creator, source, etc. There should be a 7-digit record ID (1752329, for this photo).

3. In the URL bar, enter http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/digital_gallery/xml/*******.xml, where ******* is your 7-digit record ID. For Eartha it’s http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/digital_gallery/xml/1752329.xml

Ta-da! This should work for any of the 700,000+ photos in their gallery. Enjoy!
